RIM might drop BlackBerry access fee

RIM might drop BlackBerry access fee

Research in Motion (RIM) is not in the best of financial positions at this point in time, simply because they are not selling enough smartphones to make up the numbers. In fact, we were just talking about their most recent quarterly loss that amounted to a whopping $125 million, which is a far cry from the $900 million plus profit that they made just a year ago. Having said that, there is a rumor going around that RIM might just decide to stop charging an access fee for BlackBerry users, and this might just work in RIM's favor even if for a quarter or two.

Still think drinking and driving don't mix. Well you're right. They don't. But every once in a while something comes along to make us rethink that rift. Like that set of radiator decanters, those Alfa Romeo and Lancia wines, Krug's 1979 Rolls-Royce panel wagon or really any racing car bearing the Martini livery.

The Samsung I9300 might be the Galaxy M, a mid-range Android device

A little over a week ago, we reported on a certain handset with the codename I9300. As it turns out according to a tip sent in to GSM Arena, the Samsung I9300 handset will be known as the Galaxy M rather than the highly-anticipated Galaxy S3. If this turns out to be true, it might explain quite a lot of things. For starters the leaked image that accompanied the I9300 did not look anything like what an upcoming Samsung flagship device might look like.

We can't say we're particularly surprised, but Apple CEO Tim Cook managed to take some time out of his whirlwind tour of China to pay a visit to a Foxconn factory in Zhengzhou charged with making those shiny new iPhones. The above shot of the bespectacled executive in the bright yellow smock was issued by Apple itself to document the trip.

Ferrari contracts Movado for new line of watches

Having trouble keeping track of which watchmaker is producing timepieces for Ferrari these days. It can get a little confusing. Girard-Perregaux held the license for many years, after which a lackluster partnership was formed with Panerai. Then Cabestan was contracted to make one very fancy-looking watch for the Prancing Horse marque, before Hublot got the nod. And that's not including the more affordable watches marketed less to Ferrari owners than to the Scuderia's tifosi.

2013 Mazda CX-5 meets The Six Million Dollar Man

2013 Mazda CX-5 meets The Six Million Dollar Man

Mazda has given the 2013 CX-5 The Six Million Dollar Man treatment in a new ad. As we all know, the crossover segment is rife with compromise. With half the capability of an SUV and none of the driving dynamics of an equivalent hatchback, most of the vehicles hold all the appeal of venereal disease for most enthusiasts. If Mazda's marketing is to be believed, the 2013 CX-5 cures those ails, as it were. Along with the best fuel economy of any SUV in North America, the vehicle promises to offer buyers a more spirited driving experience.

Expect to see more of The Six Million Dollar Man associated with the CX-5.

Travel in traffic estimates return to Google Maps, promises not to suck this time

You might remember that, once upon a time, Google Maps offered you two estimates for your travel time - ideal and in traffic. The problem was, Big G's estimates weren't so great. So, the web giant quietly removed the feature last year and simply started providing traffic-free travel times. Well, trip times in traffic are back, and this time Google promises their guess work won't suck. Using both live and historic traffic data Google Maps now offers an estimate of how long your trip will take in current conditions, directly under the congestion-free time.

Sugru – Hack Things Better Review

Around my household I'm known as McGyver because of my VERY improvised solutions to fixing things. The issue I have though is that often my fixes don't even last as long as an episode of McGyver  When I first came across a product called Sugru, my mind boggled about the many different ways that this could be used. Sugru is an air-curing rubber that can be formed and shaped by hand, sticks to most surfaces, cures to a tough flexible silicone overnight, and is stable at -60°C to + 180°C. Strong, flexible, waterproof and durable, it can be used for a multitude of purposes to adapt, modify and repair.

Latest ASUS Transformer Prime update now rolling out, brings face unlock and other features

The “awesome” ASUS Transformer Prime update we were first teased with earlier this week is now rolling out to users. As was detailed yesterday, the new software brings about features like face unlock, new lockscreen notification controls, and the Google Play suite among other fixes and tweaks. We’ve received reports from several users in the US who were able to pull the update by performing the old “check for updates” routine in the ‘About’ portion of the settings menu. It might behoove other owners of the Transformer Prime to do the same.

Walter Röhrl and Audi Sport Quattro S1 reuniting for 25th anniversary run up Pikes Peak

Pikes Peak. It's one of the most grueling races in the world, climbing steeply uphill some 20 kilometers around 150 curves to the summit at 4,301 meters. These days the course is paved, but back in 1987 it was all dirt. That's when the legendary Walter Röhrl drove the 600-horsepower Audi Sport Quattro S1 up the mountain in a blistering 10:48. Sure, others have done it quicker since, but they've done it on pavement whereas Röhrl did it in the dirt.

Twenty-five years later, Audi is bringing Röhrl and his mighty S1 back to Pikes Peak for a high-speed trip up memory lane.

Touted to arrive sometime in 2013 according to Asian research group CLSA, word on the street has it that Foxconn, one of the main manufacturing subcontractors for Apple, has decided to throw some money in Sharp Electronics' direction, which might very well pave the way for a true blue Apple TV set instead of remaining as a cute little droid-like device in the corner of your home.

There's no lack of choices in timepieces for automotive enthusiasts, but unfortunately most of them come down to simply slapping an automaker's name or logo (or that of a racing series or driver) on an existing timepiece and calling it a day. That, however, is not the route Maserati has gone with its new timepiece. In fact, you'd have to turn this watch over to see the Trident logo on the casebook.

Dell leaves its US phone plans blank after ending sales of the Venue and Venue Pro here

While Dell may still be releasing Streaks and Venues in other countries, a company spokesman tells PC World that its last remaining phone stateside, the Venue and Venue Pro are no longer on sale. While the short lifecycle of mobile products was cited in the pair's time with us drawing to a close, the lack of replacements means Dell is out of the smartphone game in this country less than two years after entering with the Aero and Streak 5. While the spokesperson confirmed Dell would introduce more mobile devices in the US later this year, they could not say whether or not phones would be among them.

If not for Leap Day, Apple would've seen this one granted a year to the day after it was filed; as it stands, 365 days will just have to do. At any rate, Apple has not only managed to secure a patent this fine morning for an eject-able SIM tray, but also one for an antenna isolation apparatus. In simple(ish) terms, the patent details an antenna structure in a portable electronic device that's comprised of “first, second, and third resonating elements aligned along a common axis parallel to a ground plane,” with a multiple-arm, multiple-frequency design taking shape.

The product is also said to have a resolution of 1,600 x 960 or 1,280 x 960. Early Subaru BRZ sales running at 4x projections in Japan

The Subaru BRZ is off to an impressive sales start in Japan. According to Subaru, the two-door is besting the automaker's sales projections by wide margins. As of right now, Subaru has sold 3,551 of the coupes, which is around four times the company's estimates. Fuji Heavy Industries put out a very conservative number of 450 units per month as a sales goal for the BRZ before the vehicle hit the market.
Perhaps more interesting is the fact that a whopping 60 percent of buyers are under 40 years old, and two-thirds of all BRZ owners are opting for the six-speed manual gearbox.

As impressive as the Shelby 1000 is, someone at Shelby apparently thought 950 horsepower wasn't good enough. With a few clicks of the mouse, a photo of one of the muscled-up pony cars was given a little drama to boost excitement. At first, Shelby's official line was that nothing in the photo was altered except shadows and that, yes, the super Shelby's front end did in fact lift several inches off the ground in the photo you see above.
But anyone with at least one good eye can see several problems. Apparently, that does not include the Autoblog staff.

HTC's team up with Beats has certainly brought about a higher degree of audio quality when it comes to some of their smartphones, such as the HTC Sensation XE, but perhaps this is just a precursor of things to come. HTC's latest design patent points towards the concept of a slide out stereo speaker, where this media-centric device (no idea on whether it will be a smartphone or a portable media player, but the smart money would definitely be on the former as the latter is a dead end market with Apple ruling the roost) will have front and rear facing stereo speakers that are touted to deliver a virtual surround sound experience for the user.

PSA: Real LCD HDTV refresh rates are getting harder to find behind marketing fluff

PSA: Real LCD HDTV refresh rates are getting harder to find behind marketing fluff

Electronics makers love a spec they can get behind and make the center point of their marketing efforts - no matter how useless it is as a comparison. The undisputed be all arms race HDTV metric for the past few years, LCD refresh rates, has recently become even muddier according to HD Guru. Terms like Clear Motion Rate (Samsung) and Scenes Per Second (Vizio) are meant to confuse the customer while resembling the somewhat useful (and, as of late, unmentioned on the box) refresh rate. Our advice.

Voice-command integration for TV isn't something that's really been explored yet. It's been rumored about in the “Apple iTV“, and it's available on the Xbox 360 via the Kinect, and not much else. But it looks like that's about to change. According to Pocket-lint, Panasonic has worked closely with the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) to create a voice-activated control system in its upcoming Viera TVs this year.
The voice controls will allow users to adjust the volume, change channels, find out listing information, and even set a program to record.
