Major carriers in the U.S. to launch database for stolen smartphones

In a desperate attempt to counter the growing number of smartphone thefts in the U.S., carriers are now working together to introduce databases that will prevent stolen phones from functioning on their networks. It is reported that in 2011 alone, roughly 38 percent of all robberies recorded in Washington were actually smartphone thefts. The condition is much more worse in New York, where more than 40 percent of accounted robberies are considered to be smartphone related. Earlier this year, the U.S. Federal Communications Commission together with a few police chiefs in the U.S.

Apple faces new patent lawsuit concerning FaceTime

Apple's video calling software application known as FaceTime is a strong selling point in today's tough consumer electronics industry. But the tables could turn, now that the Cupertino-based tech behemoth is receiving a blow out of the water. A Texas-based firm called Intercarrier Communications (ICC) has just filed a patent complaint against Apple in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia for allegedly violating its 6,985,748 patent.

GM's Reuss: Next Cadillac Escalade to be 'much less ostentatious'

Within the next year or so, Cadillac will be launching its fourth-generation Escalade, and the SUV will be entering into a very different market than the one its predecessor first encountered in 2006. Over its history, General Motors' most expensive SUV has carved out a high-profile, highly profitable niche for itself as a larger-than-life, flamboyant style statement. But the next Escalade will dial back the chrome and the overtly conspicuous design that made it popular among attention-grabbing celebrities.

MetroPCS breaks 1 million LTE customers, makes $193 million profit despite losing 312,000 users in Q3

MetroPCS might be the smaller of the two parties in the proposed merger with T-Mobile, but it certainly knows how to coin a profit in difficult times. The carrier recorded a massive $193 million net profit this quarter, $44 million more than it made in Q2, despite losing 312,000 subscribers in the three month period. The reason behind the rosy numbers was a combination of cash-saving exercises and canny investments in securities, pushing total revenue to $1.3 billion. The network now has just under nine million customers, with more than a million of those subscribing to one of the company's LTE packages.

Microsoft Surface exposes its guts to iFixit, knows if you've been meddling with it

Now that the Microsoft Surface is in the wild and we've probed it from the outside, the tool-toters at iFixit have opened one up to see what makes it tick - and whether you dare attempt a repair yourself. The first thing they noticed was how tricky it was to remove a plastic access cover, which caused unavoidable damage to the tamper-evident label when they finally got it off. That would tip repair depots that you've been rummaging about, likely rendering your warranty moot. Other sore spots included the LCD and glass being fused together, along with a keyboard connector that's impossible to get out without pulling the display off first.

Microsoft brings guest user account to Windows Phone 8 via Kid's Corner

Ever dreamed of having more than one user account on your smartphone. Microsoft's making that a reality with Kid's Corner for Windows Phone 8. If you're not a parent, don't let the name deceive you: this particular feature is great for both the tiny tots and all of your grown-up friends, as it allows you to choose which apps, games, music and videos show up when the device is in that particular mode. It's a feature that has strangely eluded the other major platforms, and it absolutely gives WP8 an edge for those concerned about youngsters (and potentially even colleagues) getting into trouble with your phone.

Kia under fire for 'likes for food' Facebook promo

Kia, like just about every other business, is trying hard to find its way in the ever-evolving world of social media. Some might say the Korean automaker is trying too hard, though, judging by responses to its new Facebook campaign. The initiative was born out of an attempt to build the company's Facebook likes, while at the same time raising money for charity with a program called "1 Like = 1Day Food for 1 Family.". Kia's Facebook campaign asked users to click on the social media site's ubiquitous thumbs-up "Like" button.

Sharp announces first TVs with Moth-Eye technology: the AQUOS XL series

Sharp may look like it's in trouble, but that's not stopping it bringing new displays to the market, including today's announcement of the AQUOS Quattron 3D XL TV line. Behind the mouthful of acronyms, these LED-backlit LCD panels are the first to feature Sharp's Moth-Eye technology, designed to reduce glare and pump out bright colors, as well as a deep black. The company's 'four primary color' tech is partly responsible for the rich output, which squeezes a yellow sub-pixel in with the standard R, G and B. All the panels run at 1,920 x 1,080, as you'd expect, sport a 10 million to 1 contrast ratio and use five speakers to deliver audio.

Windows 8 is in stores today - are you buying a copy?

That special moment has come which usually rolls around only once every three years: Microsoft has released a new version of Windows. For the version 8 update, though, the stakes are higher than ever. Redmond isn't just trying to convince legions of existing Windows users that they should break their PC update cycles. It's trying to reclaim a foothold in a tablet space that's now dominated by Apple and Google - and it's dipping into self-designed computers for the first time with a Surface tablet that theoretically represents Microsoft's perfect vision.

RAZR HD Review + RAZR Maxx HD Review

The introduction of the new Droid RAZR HD and RAZR Maxx HD represent Motorola's first entry in the high-end smartphone market since it was acquired by Google. With a new management in place and a clear strategy oriented around “speed, battery life and the best of Android”, Motorola wants to re-affirm that it too can make great Android phones. In fact, it would be bizarre if a Google company wasn't able to build great Android phones… In any case, those two smartphones are designed to represent the above commitment from Motorola, which has chosen a “racing” design in reference to the idea of high-performance.

LG looks towards webOS Smart TV

Smart TVs are starting to creep into our living rooms slowly but surely, thanks to a decent Internet connection that has made its way into just about every single home. LG, for instance, is said to debut a new Smart TV that will run on the now defunct webOS. No idea on just how LG intends to go around implementing a webOS-powered Smart TV, as it sure as heck is a whole lot harder to develop compared to what we hear on paper.

Windows 8 upgrade diary: the buying experience

Windows 8 upgrade diary: the buying experience

There were balloons. There were streamers. There were brand new Ultrabooks, members of staff unfurling banners, and - once other customers started to arrive - there was even a vibe of genuine excitement for today's official launch of Windows 8 in the UK. But whichever aisle I scanned, nowhere was to be found what I had come to buy: a Windows 8 disc for desktop upgraders. It was a faltering start, but it was also strangely symbolic of my mission - namely, to explore what Microsoft's latest operating system can do for regular desktop folk.

What do you get when you attach a point-and-shoot, display, microphone, RFID reader and a bunch of big buttons to a clear plastic box and stick it all in a classroom with a bunch of three- to five-year-olds. Carnegie Mellon's CREATE Lab calls the creation Message from Me. It's a way of engaging early education students with technology, developing language and social skills and helping keep parents abreast of their school day activities. The tool encourages kids to record a thought or take a picture and send it to a parent by pulling a card with their face on it down from the wall and scanning on the RFID reader.
