Dropcam HD WiFi Camera Review

Dropcam HD WiFi Camera Review

My friends at work used to give me funny looks when I'd announce that the Fedex guy just dropped a package off at my house. At first they thought I had somehow obtained a super power of either ESP or remote viewing. While having a super power would definitely be awesome (and I still think I should have gotten one after all the radiation treatments I had last year), I have to admit that I cheated… I knew that the Fedex guy had been at my house, because my Dropcam told me so. The Dropcam is an easy to setup WiFi camera, that can be accessed from any web browser and a special Android or iOS app.

Panasonic's Eluga V for NTT DoCoMo swings past the FCC

Panasonic's Eluga V smartphone arrived at NTT DoCoMo back in May and now the company has dropped one of its handsets off at the FCC's underground bunker. The Ice Cream Sandwich-running phone has a 4.6-inch, 1280 x 720 display, wireless charging, the same water and dust proofing that we saw in its two brothers, HSPA, Bluetooth 3.0 and 802.11 b/g/n WiFi.

New Mac OS X virus discovered

Kaspersky Labs released a report today about a new virus on the Mac OS X today that spreads itself through zip file attachments. Costin Raiu of Kaspersky Labs said that they were able to “intercept” the new advanced persistent threat or ATP using a new MacOS X backdoor variant targeted at Uyghur activists. Uyghur are a Turkic ethnic group living in Eastern and Central Asia. On Monday this week, a group of Uyghur activists were reportedly beaten up by the Chinese police forces while holding a peaceful demonstration.
Raiu believes that the new wave of APT attacks was targeted to a few Uyghur Mac users.

No Instagram For You, Nexus 7

No Instagram For You, Nexus 7

So you're excited about taking pictures using your new Nexus 7, but didn't you read the memo. Google's Nexus 7 tablet does not have a rear-facing camera, just a 1.2-megapixel front-facing shooter for face-to-face video chat. That makes the device incompatible with most Android camera apps, including Instagram. According to Tim Smalley, digital marketing manager of Asus (Google's manufacturing partner for Nexus 7), Google Play app store will actually provide an error message if the owner tries to download the app to the Nexus 7.

The absence of a back camera is largely due to cost-cutting.

Ultrabook Share of $700+ Windows Notebooks (NPD Group). When Intel introduced the Ultrabook brand and accompanying rules and guidelines, many were skeptical and talked about it being a marketing “gimmick”. Data shows that they could not have been more wrong. First of all, although relatively modest in terms of overall volume, the Ultrabook products are really important because they generate higher profits and that's what keeps PC makers going.

NPD, a research company, says that Ultrabooks now represent 11% of all $700+ Windows laptops.

BMW and Toyota to partner on sports car and EV tech

If you are any other carmaker, this is really not what you want to hear on a Friday morning: The industry's 800-pound gorilla and one of its most profitable brands are joining forces. If you are an enthusiast (or environmentalist), however, the would-be products of this collaboration may have you cheering like a Miami Heat fan. While details are admittedly scarce, the notion of BMW and Toyota throwing in on a sports car has us tickled, especially considering how well the Japanese giant's liaison with Subaru to produce the BRZ and Scion FR-S has turned out.

Gmail dethrones Hotmail as the world's largest email service

Google announced today via its official blog that Gmail now has more than 425 million active users around the world – a gargantuan feat considering its humble beginnings as a beta release in April 2004. Google's announcement today means that Gmail is now the word's largest email service, blowing past Microsoft's Hotmail for the first time. Yahoo Mail used to be the king of email services. But both Hotmail and Gmail got Yahoo Mail users deviating the course.
I can still remember using Yahoo Mail first prior to moving to both Hotmail and Gmail.

So maybe that self-chilling soda didn't pan out, but Coca-Cola is working on another method for keeping its beverages cool without using power. In partnership with Fuji Electric Retail Systems, the company has developed the A011 vending machine, which is capable of keeping drinks frosty for up to 16 hours a day without using energy. The A011 works by shifting the cooling process from mid-day, when energy use is higher, to nighttime, when there is a higher power capacity. Even after the machine stops powering the chilling, the unit's temperature only rises slightly, thanks to vacuum insulation and an airtight design.

Saudi man sentenced to beheading by sword for joyriding deaths

A Saudi man in his thirties, identified by the name Mutannish in reports, has been sentenced to death for causing two onlookers to die during a driving demonstration of Hagwalah – one of the wild displays of drifting we're used to seeing from that part of the world. During the show, two were killed when a person in the audience was hit and fell onto another. The driver then sped off, failing to provide any assistance. His sentence was likely influenced by the fact that he went into hiding and that he was wanted for the same crime, the death of an onlooker, at previous event.

Valve Source Filmmaker makes a movie out of any Source game, now you're directing with Portals (video)

Creating machinima with a video game engine usually requires accepting one of two truths: either that it will require a lot of fudging or that it will have all the sophistication of playing with action figures. Valve Software isn't very happy with that dichotomy, which is why it's posting its very own movie-making tool, Source Filmmaker, as a public beta. Any game that runs on the Source engine, whether it's Left 4 Dead 2, Portal 2 or another in the family, can have gameplay run-throughs edited and dissected right down to custom facial expressions.

We got an in-person look at the new 2013 Ford F-150 SVT Raptor at a Ford event yesterday, and we have to say that Ford's stock photography does not do this new "Terrain" color justice. Neither do these pictures, really, but Ford wouldn't let us find somewhere more suitable to photograph their updated SVT truck. Terrain is a sandy beige hue with a flat finish. It's not matte, but this paint certainly isn't reflective by modern standards. In fact, it's quite reminiscent of those wonderful old lacquer finishes from the '30s and '40s.

Launched in November 2011, the Kindle Fire runs a modified version of Android, features a 7 inch display, and costs only $199.99. Google's tablet, likely called Nexus 7, will also have a 7 inch display. It will probably run Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, and could be officially announced later today, at Google's I/O conference. CCNY, UC Berkeley develop lasers that could rewrite quantum chips, spin those atoms right round

Computers are normally limited by the fixed nature of their chipsets: once the silicon is out of the factory, its capabilities are forever locked in. The University of California Berkeleydeveloped a technique that could break chips free of these prisons and speed along quantum computing. They found that hitting gallium arsenide with a laser light pattern aligns the spins of the atoms under the rays, creating a spintronic circuit that can re-map at a moment's notice.
