Personal Energy Orb Aruino project knows you haven't been exercising, cripples your computer

Spending too much time indoors. You need a Personal Energy Orb, a glowing Arduino powered ball that allows you to trade physical exertion for a tolerable mouse speed. Developed by two students at the University of Munich for a physical computing course, the PEO connects to a bike-mounted revolution counter to note how far a user rides, counting the total distance toward usable time on a computer. A fully "charged" green orb will allow a user to use their PC unhindered - but a spent red orb will drag Windows' cursor sensitivity settings to its lowest.

ITC rules that Apple did not violate Motorola's patent, remands case back to judge

About a week ago we reported that some of Apple's products, namely the iPhone, iPad and Macs could be banned on the 24th of August as part of an ongoing legal dispute between Apple and Motorola. As it turns out, luck really seems to be on Apple's side as not only did the jury rule in Apple's favor in the Apple vs Samsung lawsuit, but it seems that a Commission review of the ITC case between Apple and Motorola has determined that the Cupertino company did not violate the patent in question and basically exonerated Apple.

Facebook reportedly âforcingâ employees to use Android phones in order to improve the Android Facebook app

As we had reported a couple of days ago, Facebook for iOS was given a pretty big update which hopefully will sit well with iOS users. Unfortunately the Android version of the Facebook app has yet to receive the same treatment and while I personally find that the app isn't too horrible, it could do some with tweaks and improvements and added functionality. Facebook seems to think so as well and according to reports, Facebook's management has instituted a new "policy" that supposedly will make employees more proactive in making the Android Facebook app just as good, if not better than its recently updated iOS counterpart.

Apple v. Samsung jury rules Samsung infringed on Apple's patents, 'knew or should have known' it was doing it

The federal court jury in the patent infringement lawsuit between Apple and Samsung has presented its verdict after deliberating for just for 21 hours and 37 following the three week trial. This particular case started with Apple's lawsuit last April and now the jury's decision is that Samsung did infringe on Apple's bounceback patent with all 21 of its products in question. For the patent on pinch-and-zoom, the jury ruled all but three of the devices listed infringed, and more damningly, found that Samsung executives either knew or should have known their products infringed on the listed patents.

These cars are headed to the Great Crusher In The Sky

It happens every year. We bid adieu to some cars and trucks that will be missed, and say good riddance to others wondering how they stayed around so long. Whether they're being killed off for slow sales or due to a new product coming along to replace them, the list of vehicles being discontinued after 2012 is surprisingly long and diverse. CNN Money has compiled a list of departing vehicles, to which we've added a few more of our own.

2013 Ford Explorer Sport officially rated at 365 HP, 16x22 MPG

The 2013 Ford Explorer Sport goes on sale this fall, packing a 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6, premium interior features and sporty (sort of) exterior design elements. And while Ford originally told us that the Sport would produce "at least 350 horsepower," we've now learned that the top-trim Explorer will churn out 365 hp and 360 pound-feet of torque. If that sounds familiar, it's because those are the same totals found in the Taurus SHO sedan, which shares its engine. 365 hp and 360 lb-ft are a welcome improvement over the 290 hp and 255 lb-ft present in the naturally aspirated V6 model. Fuel economy doesn't suffer horribly, either.

Both Samsung and Apple get sales bans after patent infringement lawsuit in South Korea

While we're anxiously awaiting the verdict in the Apple v. Samsung case in California, here's something from South Korea. The two companies have been in a legal battle over there too, with various claims of patent infringement flying in both directions. Samsung sued Apple first, in response to Apple's many actions in courts across the world. Then Apple countersued.
And now, many months later, we finally have a ruling, which might give us an indication of what future decisions on matters like these might look like.

Kindle Fire 2 coming on September 6? Amazon schedules press conference

September is the new January or February in the mobile world, it seems. At least it is this year. Traditionally, most new mobile device announcements come either in January (during CES) or February (when MWC takes place). But now, September may just become the biggest month of this year in this respect.
Nokia will unveil its Windows Phone lineup on September 5. Motorola will probably announce the Droid RAZR HD and the Droid M on the same date.

But Gizmag says the most amazing claim from Aerofex concerns the tandem duct vehicle's guidance system. The company says its prototype uses no flight software or electronics of any kind to give the “pilot” complete control over pitch, roll and yaw.

LG Optimus Vu to bow on Verizon as the Intuition, stylus not included?

Could this 5-inch LG handset be Verizon's answer to the Galaxy Note. Our Intuition tells us otherwise (get it?), but that screenshot above and corresponding FCC docs deign to differ. Really though, that lady razor name's the purported new moniker for Big Red's rebranded Optimus Vu: the heretofore Korea-only phablet we recently reviewed. While we found the outsized handset's worth as a true S-Pen rival hampered by its lack of a digitizer and 4:3 aspect ratio, it could catch on with folks eager for a 7-inch tablet alternative.

Well, it's probably not as glowing a quarter as the company was hoping for, but a slight rebound in profits from last quarter should give it something to smile about. Revenue was up roughly $100 million sequentially, which translated into an equal amount of additional profit. After netting just $635 million in income during Q1, Dell banked $732 million in Q2 of 2013. Year-over-year, however, things are a little less rosy.
