Visualized: Where NASA's SLS will get high

We've still got quite a while to go before NASA gets back into the space travel game with SLS, but the first pieces of the potential inter-planetary transportation puzzle are starting to fall into place. The $500 million mobile launch tower of the future has already been rolled out and is undergoing structural testing at the Kennedy Space Center.

The Lenovo LePhone S760 is a relatively compact device featuring a 3.7" AMOLED screen, a 5MP main camera and a 1.3MP front-facing snapper.

Lenovo LePhone K2 is Another High-End Phone for China

Lenovo LePhone K2 is Another High-End Phone for China

Lenovo's been busy this week. To my count, they have announced three different tablets and three different phones. That third phone is the Lenovo LePhone K2, a high-end handset for their main market, China. It'll sport a 4.3 inch IPS display, a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM and an 8 megapixel camera. We're still running on Android 2.3.5 but we assume this piece of hardware has the capabilities necessary to run Android 4.0. It looks great, but considering Lenovo's past with mobile outside of China we won't get our hopes up to see it in Europe or North America.

New Samsung chip has two of everything: two cores, 2GHz, 2560 x 1600 graphics

Sammy's current Cortex A9-based chips are hardly slackers - the Galaxy Note already proved that to any lingering doubters. Nevertheless, the next-gen Exynos 5250 SoC promises to double that sort of performance, by harnessing two Cortex-A15 chips clocked at 2GHz each, along with a GPU that can output resolutions of up to 2560 x 1600 (WQXGA). It's like big.LITTLE computing, except without the LITTLE.

Samsung announces the Exynos 5250 2GHz chipset, is super fast

Here is the piece of news many people have been waiting for. Samsung has just announced the chipset which will go in its high-end tablets and smartphones. Dubbed the Exynos 5250, this latest SoC is the successor of the massively successful Exynos 4210, which as many of you know is the one powering the Samsung Galaxy S II. Just like it, the Exynos 5250 features two 2GHz cores, but now they are ARM Cortex A15 ones, built on the 32nm manufacturing process.

Motorola Xoom 2 unboxing and first impressions (video)

What's this oddly curved box we see before us. Ah, yes, it's Motorola's (joint) second attempt at the Android tablet game. The Xoom 2 is another 10.1-inch widescreen Honeycomb offering, looking to make up for the lost opportunities of its predecessor - slimmer, faster and certainly packing more vertices. While we put it through its paces, we thought you'd appreciated some close-up shots with what appears to be the final retail model. First impressions? Those corners certainly do help keep it in our hands, and performance seemed suitably speedy.

Malls halt cellphone-tracking experiment after complaint from Senator Schumer

As you may have heard last week, two US malls (the Promenade Temecula in Southern California and Short Pump Town Center in Richmond, Virginia) decided to conduct a little experiment this holiday shopping season, in which they employed some cellphone-tracking technology in an effort to learn more about individuals' shopping patterns. That technology came from Path Intelligence, which has previously outfitted UK malls with the system, and assures folks that it only detects cellphone signals, and is unable to gather phone numbers or other personal data.

Two rugged Android smartphones are finally about to be shipped to those who pre-ordered them in the UK. Well known mobile retailer Clove has received shipments of both the Sony Ericsson Xperia Active as well as the Motorola Defy+ JCB Edition. The Xperia Active was announced in June, believe it or not, and we've been waiting for it to hit the streets ever since. Retailers started taking pre-orders for the Xperia Active in July, and here we are after what is probably one of the longest pre-order periods in history – and it's finally available.

If you'd like to get an Xperia Active from Clove, you'll have to shell out £240.

HTC may ignore smartphone sales ban in Germany

HTC may ignore smartphone sales ban in Germany

. IPCom has reportedly moved to ban HTC from selling smartphones in Germany. HTC lost a patent lawsuit to IPCom in 2009 and recently decided not to file an appeal against the ruling, likely in an effort to avoid further litigation it might have faced from a ruling on two additional patent cases. HTC may ignore IPCom's request to stop selling smartphones because it believes IPCom's lawsuit is no longer valid. According to BBC, HTC has argued that the German Federal Patents court ruled that IPCom's patent claim was invalid in December of 2010. Whether or not HTC faces a fine for ignoring IPCom's request will be the court's decision.

Motorola Milestone 2 (DROID 2 For Not-America) Finally Receives Gingerbread

It’s been a long time coming, and quite frankly it’s rather sad how long it took for this to come, but the Motorola Milestone 2 has finally received its Gingerbread upgrade. European users of the device have been complaining to Motorola regarding the lack of updates and it seems this book can finally be closed. Things will begin tomorrow and will go out in a staggered process (meaning don’t get too upset if you can’t download it right away when you wake up).  We’re glad that’s over.

App Tethers iPhone to Computer, No Jailbreak Required

App Tethers iPhone to Computer, No Jailbreak Required

It's not pretty, but it (sometimes) works. The app comes in two parts. A Windows/Mac client and the iOS app. It works by creating a virtual, software-based Ethernet port to which your computer connects via USB. That's the theory at least — in my testing (with an iPad, not with an iPhone) the Mac app wouldn't stay up for long enough to actually use the web. It does actually connect — after launch the app opens the Tether site in your browser — but crashes as soon as I try to navigate elsewhere.

The problem appears to be an exception with the Mac app's kernel extension, although the iPad end seems to work just fine.

Toyota crosses a smartphone with a runaround and reveals a car that can change its look at the touch of a button

If Toyota has its way, paint jobs could become a thing of the past, because it's unveiled a car that can change its whole look in an instant. The Fun-Vii, which stands for 'vehicle interactive internet', is a concept car with a bodyshell made of touch-screen panels that not only allow the driver to change the pattern on display but also connect the car to the dealership's website for a check-up. It even greets its driver with a message that flashes up on the door. Toyota showed off the unique car ahead of the Tokyo Motor Show today, with company president Akio Toyoda saying: 'A car must appeal to our emotions.

Task killers do little to prolong battery life

Task killers do little to prolong battery life

It is said that for all Android smartphone owners, one of the first few apps that you would need to install on your handset right from the get go would be a Task Killer of sorts – good thing those are free over from the Android Market. The reason for doing so. Apps continue to run in the background even when you are no longer using them, so to have them running would translate to them consuming more battery power on your handset. Well, that is what the theory is all about anyways.
Not only that, it is the only way to make sure you free up additional resource on your handset whenever there are too many programs running around.

Samsung's new Bada flagship has just docked into our illustrative French port. Announced back in the summer, the Wave 3 arrives on the refreshed Bada 2.0 OS, powered by a 1.4GHz processor and packing a four-inch Super AMOLED display. Storage matches the watery iteration, with 3GB of memory baked-in, with expansion possible through microSD. Meanwhile, an auto-focus five megapixel shooter will do its best to fill all that space.

Architect and racecar designer Matthew Kim gets much respect for his messed-up PC builds and now he's had a go at the 9-inch-cubed small form factor. White Droid RAZR Headed to Verizon?

White Droid RAZR Headed to Verizon?

Taking a cue from Apple, manufacturers have discovered that an easy way to squeeze and extra bit of cash out of their handset designs is to give them a quick whitewash. The Droid RAZR looks to be the latest handset to receive its white counterpart as Verizon's computer systems are currently listing the alternative color alongside the darker-hued version of the ultra-thin smartphone. Plans for availability are unknown at this time and we are only left to speculate as to what the final re-deco will look like.

All mouth and no trousers: then X-S1 is an SLR-spec camera with a compact camera sensor. Fujifilm's new X-S1 takes a huge step back in terms of X-series body design, but almost makes up for it in specs. The X-series features the rangefinder-like X100 with the dual optical/electronic viewfinder and big APS-C sensor, and the neat, retro-styled X-10. Aside from styling, it seems that the X cameras have little in common. Now things are even more confused.

I must admit that between the LG Optimus 3D and the HTC Evo 3D, I prefer the former's 3D display as it seems more real and vivid, although I myself am a HTC diehard. Ah well, love goes beyond mere looks and capabilities I guess, and at least it allows me to throw my weight behind HTC and support them in their quest for better smartphones. That aside, it seems that Verizon Wireless themselves want to get on the stereoscopic 3D game, even though they do not have a single 3D handset in their portfolio at the moment unlike Sprint and AT&T who already have the HTC EVO 3D and LG Thrill, respectively.

HTC gets the clone treatment with HTE

Want to clone a device. Look no further than the masters residing over at China, where the latest device to be cloned would be HTC's smartphone, and the “fake” smartphone is known as the HTE. Yes sir, this particular knock off is touted to deliver HTC's very own Sense UI, not to mention being compatible with Sprint's 4G technology – at least that is what the branding at the back touts, although I am not quite sure whether this will be case when you unbox said device in your living room.
