Honda reports $1.9 billion profit in first quarter despite sales lag at home

Ford, General Motors and Chrysler have been living in a world of sunshine and buttercups after their April-through-June financials hit the newswire, and Toyota is doing pretty good as well. Honda. Not so much. While Japan's third-largest manufacturer saw $1.9 billion in profits, the 5.1-percent jump was lower than expected thanks to a drop in its home-market sales.

PSA Peugeot-Citroën gets EU approval for life-line loan from France

PSA Peugeot-Citroën has been struggling to offer low finance rates to customers since its banking arm, Banque PSA Finance, had its credit score downgraded, which in turn has made it hard for the French carmaker to compete with brands that offer lower finance rates, such as Volkswagen. The French government recognized the catch-22 and, after negotiations with PSA and European Union approval, has guaranteed the banking arm seven billion euro in bonds to secure its debt and lower borrowing costs, Automotive News reports. The infusion of bonds will be spread from January 1, 2013 through December 31, 2016.

Tire-carrying pedestrian gets a lucky bounce

Tire-carrying pedestrian gets a lucky bounce

Dash cam videos out of Russia and Eastern Europe always manage to crank the pucker factor up to surprising levels, but this might be one of the closest calls we've seen yet. As a man was casually crossing the street with a pair of tires in hand, a Lada Niva driver hit the brakes a little too late and a little too hard causing this spectacular incident. Lots of luck was involved here, and it is impressive how calm the pedestrian remained during and after the incident (he might even be luckier than this pedestrian who narrowly avoided being hit by a car carrier earlier in the year).

EP Tender Is A Generator On Wheels

EP Tender Is A Generator On Wheels

While an electric vehicle or electric car is a choice that makes plenty of sense if you want to enjoy a low carbon footprint, you will need to make use of mathematical formulas more often than not since there is a whole lot of calculating to be done where range is concerned. After all, electric vehicles cannot simply be "fueled up" anytime, anywhere, and recharging your ride might take a few hours instead of a few minutes where pumping gas is concerned. Well, perhaps it would be best to make use of the EP Tender, a trailer that would not be wrongly described as a "generator on wheels".

If you are like me, you are always looking for ways to be a good steward to Mother Earth. One way I do this is by using a water bottle instead of buying bottled water. The issue I have with most water bottles (and bottled waters for that matter) is that they don't keep my water cold for very long and tend to sweat. The Summit AUTOSEAL Insulated Stainless Steel Water Bottle from AVEX is one solution to that problem.

Advertising is an industry that works on metrics and the more detailed the information of their target demographic, the better. In fact, you could say that the digital age has brought about a change in the way advertising works, with targeted adverts that are based on your web browsing history becoming an established force online for quite some time now. The thing is, how will the general masses react should advertisers begin to point out one's habits and interests whenever we are offline. Do you think that this is an invasion of privacy on an unprecedented level.

Two of these — Samsung Mobile 5G and S MUSICIAN — could be the easiest picks of the litter. The former might refer to the breakthrough in wireless data Samsung announced a couple of months ago.

iTunes 11.1 Beta With iTunes Radio Released For Developers

When Apple releases iOS 7 to the public later this year, presumably in fall, a new version of iTunes will also be released. Up till now Apple has seeded four betas of iOS 7 to registered developers. The company is expected to seed two more before finally releasing the GM build prior to the public release. Today alongside iOS 7 beta 4, Apple also seeded iTunes 11.1 beta. This beta version of iTunes comes with Apple's Pandora-killer service called iTunes Radio, a service that is fully integrated in iOS 7 as well.

Right now only registered developers have access to this software as well as the iTunes Radio service.

Apart from a host of items listed in the changelog, the latest beta of iOS 7 brings a number of improvements and bug fixes. Apple has reportedly made a couple of subtle tweaks to the lock screen. To the left of the “slide to unlock” text an arrow pointing right has been added.

It's been a while since we've heard rumors of the fabled high-performance Lexus GS F, but thanks to our eager spy photographers, this looks to be our first real proof of the machine's existence. We don't have the usual brace of photos from all angles to work with this time around, our spies saying that every time Lexus' garage door opened, engineers jumped in front of the cameras to prevent the car from being photographed. Even so, we have a pretty clear glimpse at some significant changes to this GS sedan, including the same staggered, quad-pipe exhaust found on the Lexus IS F.

Ferrari 458 with $1M wheels still hasn't found a buyer (video)

Ferrari 458 with $1M wheels still hasn't found a buyer (video)

Rule number one of modifying a car: When it comes time to sell, people want to pay for the car, and could care less how much you spent in the aftermarket. This is a lesson that the guys at Latitude Wheels in Miami are currently learning. The wheel company's "flagship show car," a 2011 Ferrari 458 Italia was put up for sale on eBay weeks ago, as reported by Jalopnik. The price? Just a shade under $1.3 million. For a 458 Italia. That normally starts around $230,000. Yeah.

Latitude justifies the car's price based on a very expensive set of wheels. To be exact, the 21-inch fronts and 22-inch rears are forged Vossen Precision Series wheels.

Performance is quite impressive for an EV this size: it sprints to 60mph in just 7.6 seconds with a top speed of 90mph. The 21kWh nano-phosphate Li-ion battery is liquid cooled / heated and is located in the floor, fore and aft of the rear axle. It offers a range of up to 82 miles and takes less than seven hours to fully charge using a level 2 (240V) charging station. Better yet, with a DC fast-charging option coming to the Spark EV later this year, you'll be able to charge the battery to 80% capacity in just 20 minutes. Chevy's managed to keep the weight down to 2967lbs, which is pretty svelte for a pure electric car.

Android's ever-increasing fragmentation visualized

Android's ever-increasing fragmentation visualized

We can argue to the moon and back as to whether or not Android fragmentation will one day result in the implosion of the ecosystem, but it's hard to deny what the above graphic illustrates. One image makes a compelling case that fragmentation is a very real issue and it's only getting worse. How much worse. The number of different devices in use has increased threefold since last year.
OpenSignal, who compiled the data, counted about 4,000 distinct Android devices in 2012. So far 2013 has seen close to 12,000. That's a pretty staggering figure, but alone doesn't prove the evils of fragmentation.

Volkswagen GTD ads drive home the power of diesel

The flurry of Mk VII Golf GTD television ads by Volkswagen, which range from funny to hilarious, just make us want one that much more. The focus of these 30-second commercials is on the torque-rich performance of the hatchback's turbocharged 2.0-liter TDI diesel engine, which has a stump-thumping 280 pound-feet of torque on hand. That's enough torque for some harmless mischief, if you're to believe the commercials, and, paired with 184 horsepower, enough for the oil-burning Golf performance model to go from 0-62 miles per hour in about 7.5 seconds.

BMW, Mini aim to sell million cars off new FWD platform

Mini sold 301,526 cars in 2012; BMW sold 1.54 million of its own models. According to a piece in Autocar, analysts say the coming UKL1 platform that will form the skeleton of the third-generation Mini Cooper and coming front-wheel drive BMW 1 Series could be responsible for "more than 900,000 cars per year" all by itself. That sale fire is fueled by the UKL1 wearing up to twenty-three bodies in total between the two brands, 11 for Mini and 12 for BMW, rendering hatchbacks, sedans, coupes, convertibles, wagons, crossovers and people-haulers from about 12.5 feet to 14.5 feet.
