Sony Explains Why PlayStation 4 Console Was Not Shown During The Event

You might have heard the big news which is that Sony announced the PlayStation 4 yesterday. It is a pretty big deal considering that the PlayStation 3 has been around for quite a while, but one of the many questions the community has been asking is, where is the actual console. Sony revealed some of the features they would be bringing to the PlayStation 4, along with the new DualShock 4 controller, but they have yet to reveal the actual console itself.

Mercedes says it's tops in luxury sales for 2012, not BMW

It turns out that Mercedes-Benz North America has legitimate claim to being the top selling luxury nameplate in the US in 2012. While sources such as Autodata had put BMW in the top spot, registration data from R.L. Polk shows that Mercedes customers registering new vehicles topped the Bavarian automaker in the most recent calendar year. Polk says Benz posted 274,123 registrations, compared with BMW's 268,498.
In terms of sales posted, BMW had bested Benz 281,460 to 274,134. But sales are recorded somewhat inconsistently from automaker to automaker. Some book the sales as soon as they are shipped from factory to dealer.

This week's episode of The List on Speed brings together two episodes of the series that highlight some unique forms of four-wheeled competition. The first is the 24 Hours of LeMons, in which hosts Jessi Combs and Patrick McIntyre, compete on a team that dredged the depths of British automotive history to find their race cars. The second segment, meanwhile, has J and P in upstate New York on a frozen lake to freeze their buns off while watching Engadget Editor-in-Chief Tim Stevens go ice racing in stock Subaru WRX.

This is what driving totally stoned on marijuana looks like

With multiple states legalizing marijuana, government agencies are scrambling to research the effect of the drug on drivers. CNN recently took a look at operating a motor vehicle under the influence of pot by subjecting three users in Washington state to a little driving test with the help of a local sheriff's department. The results are a little surprising, with even casual smokers able to safely operate a car with up to five times the state's new legal limit in their blood stream. At worst, the smokers were actually more cautious on the course than they were before partaking.

Experimental mid-engine XP-819 Corvette heads to Amelia Island

It seems to be commonplace that when a new Corvette is in development, rumors swirl about a possible mid-engine layout. As is the case of Chevy's most recent C7 Corvette, these rumors never pan out. In any case, the idea for a 'Vette with an engine mounted behind the driver can probably all be traced back to a single car, the 1964 XP-819 prototype. Built as an "engineering exercise" back in 1964, the prototype was designed with a rear-mounted engine.

American Express and Twitter let you pay with #AmexSync

American Express recently announced that consumers who use Twitter will be able to pay for items using a special hashtag for certain products and websites.  After tweeting them what you want, you get a confirmation hashtag.  You then need to tweet back the confirmation hashtag, an email will be sent to you, then you need to confirm again that you want the product. It then gets shipped to your billing address.
Although this seems easy enough, a lot of questions come to mind.

Why do Russian drivers have so many dash cams? (video)

These days, it seems like the internet runs on the fuel of Russian dash cam videos. From clips showing meteors falling from the sky to plane crashes and close calls, it almost seems as if every driver on Russian roads is filming at all times. As it turns out, that's nearly true. According to Wired, several factors have culminated in the current explosion of dashcam videos. Those include everything from shady traffic cops to insurance scammers to the design of the legal system itself.

Revamped 2014 Mercedes C-Class looks dapper in camo

With the all-new CLA-Class getting ready to stake its claim as the entry-level Mercedes-Benz sedan, the next-generation C-Class will have a little room to expand its lineup and move up market. And nothing says up market more than the S-Class. Comparing these new spy shots of the 2014 C-Class to recent shots of the next-gen S-Class, we can see that newest version of Mercedes' top-selling model (in the US) will have styling that borrows heavily from the automaker's redesigned flagship. There is far less camouflage covering the new sedan than the last time we saw it, allowing us to see how the car is shaping up.

Europe Spends 3.5M Euros To Fight Network Latency

When it comes to networking, a lot of people focus on the bandwidth side of the issue, but latency is sometime a much bigger problem (especially on wireless networks). Network latency is that the that it takes an information packet to go from one computer to the next. For example, a typical web page which is hosted in your town can be accessed in 54ms. The same page from the same server can have a latency of 800ms if accessed from the other side of the globe.

Paper By FiftyThree iPad App

Technology has changed the way people do things. For one thing, it aims to make things convenient and easy to do. Smartphones for example help make communications more convenient and the apps they come with. But it's funny sometimes when some things are designed for the very purpose of preserving some of the things that technology has since changed. Probably a good example would be this Paper by FiftyThree iPad app.
Paper is a unique iPad app that lets users bring back the experience of writing and sketching on paper, but this time on an iPad display. With the availability of portable gadgets, people now seldom write anything on paper.

Nintendo 64 Remastered

DeviantArt user Zoki64 is certainly an artist worth looking out for, as you check out what he did with the old school Nintendo 64. Surely the main standout point of the Nintendo 64 would be its rather awkward looking, three-legged controller. Of course, other folks would claim that the lack of a disc-based system (it was the last cartridge-based home console from Nintendo, when the PlayStation was released at around the same time while Sega had moved on to the Dreamcast) as being the main standout point.

German Student Wants To Harness Electricity From Thin Air

Dennis Siegel harvesting some energy… Photo from dennissiegel.de. Dennis Siegel is a German student from the University of Arts Bremen, and he is working on a device that can gather energy from various radiation sources, including hi-tech radio signals like WiFi, GSM etc, but this should work with any type of electro-magnetic radiation, including natural sources (if you're near a magnetar, this could be very handy). The thing is: it's not so easy to find a natural source that will output as much energy as your router for example. So far, he has created a machine that can harvest the equivalent of one AA battery charge per day.

Antarctic Legged Research Base Crawls Out Of The Snow

On February 5th 2013, Halley VI Research Station was officially opened. It is located on the Brunt Ice shelf which is floating on the Weddell Sea. Construction started in 2005 at a cost of £26 million, by Faber Maunsell and Hugh Broughton Architects who provided the winning design in an architectural design competition held by British Antarctic Survey and RIBA Competitions. The biggest challenge for engineers in the Antarctic region is perhaps that everything gets snowed under over a period of time. The Halley VI station leaps over this problem, literally.
